Bantul, opini jogja – The idea of developing thematic villages based on local potential emerged prominently during the Socialization of the Four Pillars of the MPR RI held at Pedukuhan Klatak, Gadingsari Village, Sanden, Bantul, Sunday (23/11).
Deputy Chair of the MPR RI Socialization Body and Member of the Indonesian House of Representatives from the PDI Perjuangan Faction, H. Abidin Fikri, S.H., M.H., emphasized that such an approach offers a strategic alternative to strengthening the rural economy.
Abidin Fikri stated that tourism villages cannot rely solely on government-funded projects. Instead, local potential, particularly in agriculture, aquaculture, and UMKM (micro, small, and medium enterprises), must serve as their foundation.
“Thematic village development can be based on fish farming centers, grape or durian plantations, or other agricultural commodities. The key is active participation from all village stakeholders. The final goal remains the same: social justice and improved community welfare,” he explained.
He further stressed that tourism development must lead to long-term economic growth in rural areas. “A tourism village should grow from the community’s own strengths. It cannot depend only on central government programs. Local potential must be explored, managed, and utilized for the benefit of the people,” he added.
Art and culture observer Suwalijo highlighted the importance of cross-sector collaboration to strengthen the identity of a tourism village.
According to him, youth organizations, village administration, artists, and UMKM actors must work together to create an annual event calendar that includes sports activities, cultural performances, and local festivals.
“Well-prepared events will generate economic ripple effects that benefit various segments of the community,” he said.
Gadingsari Village Head, Widodo S.P., M.Pd., welcomed the thematic village concept, noting its alignment with the Government of Yogyakarta Special Region’s vision to position the southern region as the province’s “front yard.”
“With the opening of the Pandansimo Bridge and the planned connection to the ‘Kelok 18’ route as part of the southern national corridor, Gadingsari has significant opportunities. Thematic village development and structured event calendars can become strong tourism magnets,” Widodo stated.
He expressed hope that the initiative would not only increase tourist visits but also enhance the welfare of local artists, UMKM entrepreneurs, and farmers.
The Socialization of the Four Pillars of the MPR RI was attended by around 200 participants, including village officials, tourism awareness groups (Pokdarwis), artists, and youth members of Karang Taruna across Gadingsari. (Ip/opinijogja)
